Crimes

Killing a kinsman intentionally is a masculine crime. Accidentally killing a kinsman is a female crime. Okonkwo is banished from his fatherland and seeks redemption in his motherland. Even crimes are gendered in Igbo society, with male crimes considered more severe and premeditated than female ones. Thus, the punishment for female crimes is less severe than for male ones. It says something about Igbo values for women that a person’s punishment is to be exiled to his motherland. The author is trying to show that crimes are equal and can be a punishment with big actions.

Christian Faith

Missionaries have the authority to preach the Christian faith and sometimes to administer sacraments and provide humanitarian aid. Christian doctrines such as the Doctrine of Love professed by many missions permit the provision of aid without requiring religious conversion. The effects of missionaries on West Africa included a loss of cultural identity, a change in the unity of West Africa, an increase of nationalism, and a spread of Christianity due to trained black missionaries. In their attempt to spread the Christian faith, win converts and transform African societies, Christian missions of all denominations opened schools and disseminated education. Scientifically very important was their pioneer work in African languages.
